Finally, getting ready to go on that spring vacation? Winter has not been very kind to us this year, so if you’re looking to get away for a few days and take a break, use these tips to stay safe and have peace of mind during your trip.
Sun Safety
If you plan on going somewhere warm during your vacation you need to be careful of the sun’s harmful rays.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun is the strongest.
- Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or more. Apply it to all exposed areas, with special attention paid to the hands, feet, ears, nose, and face.
- Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go out.
- Use a waterproof sunscreen that is designed for children. Check for an allergic reaction before you apply it to the child’s whole body.
- Seek medical help for severe sunburns.
- Drink plenty of water while you are out in the sun and avoid alcoholic beverages.
Keeping Your Home Safe
- Don’t share your travel plans over social media.
- Have a trusted friend or neighbor check on your home while you are away.
- Keep burglars away by making it look like you are home; use timers on lights and stop delivery of newspapers and mail.
- Make sure windows and doors are locked before you go, and if you have an alarm system, be sure to set it before you leave. Also, lock garage doors and windows and secure sheds, attic entrances, and yard gates.
